Philips 680A
BACK
PHILIPS
680A. This A.C Mains valve radio was made in 1939, and employs long, medium
& short wave bands. The band switching is operated by a Philips mechanical
automatic tuning unit, having six keys for station selection (three keys for
medium wave, three for medium or long wave, and finally three keys for manual
waveband switching.
The receiver employs side-contact valves, ECH3, EF9, EBL1, & AZ1. Valves
with side-contact connection require care that their contacts are kept very
clean, as they are prone to get very dirty. (especially in the valve sockets.)
The mains connector plug at the rear of the set, is fastened in on the back
(card), so that if the back is removed from the set, the mains is automatically
disconnected.
The set does operate, but only on strong stations.
The
dial pointer on these sets can not normally be seen, only when the dial lamp
(which, is located in the centre of the chassis, and not near the dial) is illuminated.
The bulb is probably of the pre-focus type.
The
cabinet is of wood construction, but the front piece is of bakelite.
