Bush VHF80

BUSH
VHF80. This a.c/d.c mains valve radio was made about 1962/63, and employs long,
medium, and v.h.f bands, and has push-button switching. The dials on these models
have excellent illumination.
The
valve line-up includes :- UCC85, UF89, UCH81, UF89, UABC80, UL84, & UY85.
Like
most BUSH receivers of this era, this set contains many HUNTS "MOULDSEAL"
(metal foil )capacitors - enclosed in a plastic encapsulation - these plastic
surrounds are usually found to be cracked. They also have a bad habit of either
going "leaky", or totally losing their capacitance .
I
was called to repair one of these radios, a few years ago. When power was applied,
only a few of the valves lit up, the rest failed to do so. These valve heaters
are wired in series, so if one valve heater fails, the set fails to function.
I checked all the valve heater pins for resistance, and they were found to be
o.k. I then noticed that the wire in the heater chain had it's insulation frayed,
and the actual conductor was touching chassis, thus starving the remainder of
the valves of power. A quick re-wiring job solved the problem.
There
was a VHF81 model made with a wooden cabinet, similar in design to the VHF80.
